Featuring stories of impact from grantees, members and our community.
The spark
With work and family commitments easing, I found myself wondering about the world of philanthropy. I’d always given where I could, but I was looking for something more close-up and personal than dropping a donation in the Salvos tin at Christmas. I wanted to understand how to contribute in a deeper, more meaningful way.
The invitation
In 2022, my husband and I attended the Philanthropy Australia conference, and it opened a world of learning I hadn’t known existed. There, I met Christine Darcas, who gently steered me toward Melbourne Women’s Foundation. She explained that a giving circle would be the perfect way to understand grant making, amplify impact, and see and understand grass-roots need in Melbourne up close. I know many of us have been quietly nudged by someone who saw something in us — “Come see what we do… and would you like a job?”
The experience
What I found at MWF inspired me. I began on the Grants Committee, diving into the rigorous, thoughtful and often passionate process of assessing applications. It was eye-opening: the needs, the solutions, the creativity of grass-roots organisations shaping change for women and families in need.
I now volunteer with the Marketing & Communications Committee: ‘MarComms’. I’m learning from the experience and generosity of colleagues who have quickly become new friends. Each committee has offered something different — new skills, new insights, and new ways of contributing.
Currently, I’m responsible for website content. I love bringing what we do to life, and especially enjoy reporting on people — changemakers of all varieties.
MarComms is led by Penny Fairbanks and we are hugely supported by Amanda Thornton who performs a wider function across the organisation. If you’re an MWF member, or are planning on joining, and you have a passion for social media in particular, there’s an opportunity to join our MarComms team!
The impact on me
MWF has brought connection, learning and fun in an environment that is friendly, low-pressure but deeply impassioned. It has shown me how powerful it is when a group of women come together around shared purpose. People genuinely matter here, and that is felt in every meeting, every conversation, every decision. Attendance at my first Changemaker Awards event disabused me of any notion that philanthropy was only for stuffy old rich people. It showed me my opinion counted and I saw and experienced the amplification of my contribution.
The people
I’ve been welcomed into a community of talented, creative, curious women — people low on ego, high on warmth, and absolutely committed to making change. Their generosity of spirit has shaped my experience as much as the volunteering work itself.
Why it matters
Supporting Melbourne women and families in need is complex and deeply human. MWF not only provides funding but elevates stories, strengthens grass-roots organisations, and advocates for increased support and systemic change where it is most needed. Being part of that feels meaningful.
You’re invited
If you’ve ever wondered what volunteering at MWF might be like, I encourage you to dip a toe in the water in 2026. You’ll find purpose, connection and a community of remarkable women who make this work deeply rewarding.
