MWF Voices | From One Story to Many

BY Melbourne Women's Foundation   20/04/2026

Merril’s experience reflects something we see again and again at Melbourne Women’s Foundation.

Women looking for a more meaningful way to contribute, and finding connection through the giving circle.

When Merril attended her first MWF event, she was struck not only by the warmth of the welcome, but by the tone: there was no pressure, just a thoughtful introduction to our giving circle model.

What resonated most was the idea of amplifying impact and supporting women, together. Over time, she has seen that idea come to life in practical, tangible ways.

Merril Winney’s introduction to Melbourne Women’s Foundation began with a conversation. While walking with a friend during COVID, she first heard about giving circles—and the idea of amplifying impact stayed with her. At home, the family’s giving energy focused on rugby! So the opportunity to step into a space focused on women’s issues in Melbourne felt refreshing, relevant and meaningful.

When Merril attended her first MWF event, she was struck not only by the warmth of the welcome, but by the tone. There was no pressure—just a thoughtful introduction to the giving circle model.

What resonated most was the idea of amplifying impact and that, together, women could support other women. Over time, she has seen this theoretical philosophy come to life in practical, tangible ways.

A key part of that impact, for Merril, is MWF’s commitment to grassroots organisations. Having previously been involved with larger non-profits, which obtain the lion’s share of funding, she finds it deeply satisfying to support smaller, community-based initiatives.

“I’m blown away by what is happening at the grassroots level — complex issues break down into hopeful solutions.”

This year, Merril joined the Grants Committee — an experience that has further deepened her connection to and pride in MWF. She speaks with enthusiasm about the professionalism, rigour and care that underpin the grants process, and the sense of responsibility shared by the committee. It’s an experience that has not only expanded her understanding of community need, but also reinforced her confidence in the integrity of MWF’s work.

A life-long learner, Merril always makes time for MWF’s eye-opening information sessions. She especially values hearing of links between research, advocacy and social responses.

“These are complex topics discussed in a positive manner. Nothing is sugar-coated, but we hear about windows of hope. Presenters are professional, well informed, and yet humble enough to listen to us and to each other. Everyone’s voice is valued.”

As a Clinical Psychologist, Merril has also been able to bring this knowledge into her professional life, connecting clients with services she may not otherwise have discovered. For her, the impact of MWF extends well beyond the organisation itself.

A valued side-effect of her involvement for Merril is the people. MWF, she says, is not just about giving—it’s about “friend-raising.” It’s a place where women support one another, where voices are heard, and where her contribution is not taken for granted.

Her message to others?

“Come along and experience MWF for yourself—you might just find your people…”
